Let me try and shed some light on this without being too boring. I'm not really a band; nor am I actually crazy. I'm just one guy (usually with a drummer) who drags real pianos all over Manhattan and plays them in parks and subways, on sidewalks, street corners and just about anywhere else where you would absolutely not expect a real piano to be.
When I'm not doing my crazy piano stuff, I'm the music director for the Joffrey Ballet School. (Sounds pretty important huh...) I've been a dance accompanist for five years in New York now. And even though I enjoy it, it started to make me feel like the old man behind the piano. When I began to lose sleep every night and found myself irritable everyday, I knew without a doubt, it was time to figure out how to feel like a rock star instead.
So last summer (2007), for fun, I tried bringing a real piano into Washington Square Park, and honestly, I'd never felt so good about an activity in my entire life. I made money, played songs that I really enjoyed, and made a lot of other people happy too. No matter what age or cultural background the listeners were, I could figure out something to play that would make them smile. It's a challenge I'm really excited about. So although it may seem like I'm going down on the totem pole of career choices and stability, I feel so much better about myself and so much more connected to the community here and the arts in general.
So, beginning June 1st 2008, keep an eye out for me. Feel free to talk to me. If I'm busy, just send me an e-mail. It gets a little crazy out there sometimes, so don't take it the wrong way if I'm not up for a real long chat. I might be fending off someone who's going to spill their drink on the piano, or do any one of a number of far worse things which I'm sure you can imagine. So keep in touch. I'll be posting blogs regularly of my experiences out there and if you should speak with me, I'll surely include my experiences with you as well.... Reading over this now... Ultimately in order to understand what I'm all about, you just have to get out and see me.... Don't worry, you will, I'm sure. See you then!!
